Most players who ask how to get better at 1v1 LOL are practising the wrong thing. They queue, lose a duel, blame their aim, and queue again. Aim is maybe a third of this game. The other two thirds are what you do in the two seconds before the shot — whether you are above your opponent, whether you have a wall between you, and whether your hands can do both without thinking. Here are twelve habits, in the order they pay off.
Start with the fundamentals
1. Always have materials
The most common losing state is not "bad aim", it is "no wood". Harvest constantly. Every crate, tree, fence and vehicle you walk past while rotating is free. Aim to never drop below about 300 of your main material.
2. Wall first, think second
When you take an unexpected hit, the correct reflex is a wall in the direction of the damage. Not a turn, not a jump — a wall. Build the reflex until it happens before you have decided anything.
3. Ramp for height, immediately
Whoever is higher sees more of the other player and takes less of their own body into the fight. Ramp-jump-ramp is the whole opening of most duels.
4. Cone your own head
A ramp alone leaves you open from above. A cone (roof) placed over your head as you climb is what stops the other player from simply ramping over you.
Then fix your habits
5. Stop scoping the shotgun
It costs you a quarter of a second and gains you nothing at box-fight range. Shotgun is hip-fire, every time.
6. Learn one weapon properly before switching
Swapping loadouts every match hides which part of your play is improving. Pick the AR-and-shotgun pair, play fifty duels with it, and only then experiment.
7. Strafe while you shoot, stop while you scope
Movement makes you hard to hit and makes you inaccurate — which is the right trade at close range and the wrong one at distance. Match the movement to the range.
8. Reset your edits
A confirmed edit you did not want is a free window for your opponent. Right-click to cancel before you release, and make it automatic.
Then train deliberately
9. Warm up in Box Fight, not in ranked
Ten minutes of Box Fight puts more duels per minute in front of you than any other mode. It is the closest thing the game has to an aim trainer.
10. Practise one thing per session
"Get better" is not a plan. "Today I only practise cone-blocking a ramp rush" is. You will lose more matches that session and win more of them next week.
11. Watch your own losses, not other people's wins
After a lost duel, ask one question: was I lower, was I in the open, or was I out of materials? It is almost always one of the three, and all three are fixable without touching your aim.
12. Fix your frame rate before you blame yourself
Below about 45 fps, edits drop inputs and tracking feels rubbery. Fullscreen the player, close spare tabs, turn hardware acceleration on. A stable 60 is worth more than a week of practice.
A four-week plan that actually works
- Week 1 — binds and build reflex only. Wall on damage, ramp for height, cone overhead. See the controls guide.
- Week 2 — editing. Window, door, reset. Nothing else.
- Week 3 — build fighting: ramp rushes, cone blocks, tunnelling under.
- Week 4 — put it together in Zone Wars, where materials and positioning both matter under pressure.
None of this requires a better mouse or a better computer. Open a Box Fight and spend the first ten minutes on ramps.
